What Is Depression?

Depression, also called major depressive disorder, is one of the most common mental health conditions. If you have been feeling stuck in a repetitive pattern of sadness and hopelessness, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy, you might be dealing with depression.

If that sounds familiar, you are definitely not alone. In the United States, nearly 21 million adults—about 8.4 percent of the population—go through at least one major depressive episode every year. Depression can affect anyone, no matter your age, gender, or background.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with symptoms of depression, it is really important to reach out for help from a mental health professional as soon as possible. Depression is a real, treatable condition, and getting professional support can make all the difference. Our mental health consultants at TMS of the Carolinas are specialists in treating mental health conditions, such as depression and anxious depression, and we could help guide you on your path to wellness.

Symptoms of Depression

A professional, medical diagnosis of depression typically involves experiencing a persistent depressed mood or reduced interest in your daily activities, in addition to at least four of the following symptoms:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Poor concentration
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Constant fatigue or lack of energy
  • Slowed movements or restlessness

While these are the most common signs of depression, this is not a full list—your physician might have different criteria during your diagnosis.

Many people believe that, as most symptoms are psychological in nature, depression is a psychological condition. However, it is actually a physical condition that impacts your brain function on a biological level. Research and brain imaging studies show depression to be linked to structural abnormalities in the brain, impacting its function in areas that control and regulate your mood, emotion, and behavior.
