Have you already attempted to manage your mental health symptoms with medication treatment, including antidepressants, but been unable to achieve the results that you want? For many patients, antidepressants are simply not enough. You may be unable to manage your medication side effects, or you may not be achieving the relief you need from your symptoms.
In these cases, you could consider transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy as a tool to augment your medication therapy. This leads to an important question that many of our patients ask our specialists: Can I take antidepressants along with TMS therapy?
For most patients, the answer is yes. This is largely because NeuroStar TMS does not interact with your medication. For more information and to explore this as a treatment option, schedule your initial consultation at TMS of the Carolinas today.
Yes—one of the reasons why NeuroStar TMS is such a popular treatment option for MDD and OCD is that it can be combined with other treatments. Participating in a treatment program that combines TMS therapy and antidepressant medication, or TMS therapy and psychotherapy, could lead to even better results by optimizing both treatments.
In the case of TMS and psychotherapy, combining these treatments could help maximize the positive effects of both. NeuroStar TMS targets your mental health on a neurobiological level, while psychotherapy addresses your mental health from a behavioral level. Combining these treatments could enhance their individual benefits.
Yes, you can take antidepressants along with TMS therapy. In fact, taking TMS therapy at the same time as antidepressants might be more beneficial than taking them separately. To understand how this is possible, we need to explain how NeuroStar TMS works.
NeuroStar TMS therapy works on a neurobiological level by using magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of your brain impacted by depression. These brain areas are typically involved in emotional processing, mood regulation, and behavioral control. NeuroStar TMS activates the brain cells in these areas, promoting neural activity through magnetic stimulation. This process is entirely non-invasive and does not require any medication or surgery.
If you are thinking about pursuing a combination approach to mental health management, speak to a mental health specialist to develop the right treatment program for your needs, ensuring you safely achieve enhanced results. Our specialists at TMS of the Carolinas could create a personalized treatment plan to help you safely incorporate these complementary therapies into your routine while optimizing your chances of treatment success.
While many of our patients have found success with NeuroStar TMS alone, some have achieved their results by combining NeuroStar TMS therapy with antidepressants, psychotherapy, and alternative treatments. At TMS of the Carolinas, our specialists can work with you to develop a personalized, holistic, and well-rounded treatment program that meets your unique needs.
